How it works
As an overview, across the 10 weeks we will explore different aspects of the songwriting journey including;
How to edit & revise your words into something that has a stronger sense of song form; what feels like a verse, what sounds like chorus?
Reharmonisation in relation to your style/genre, and the emotional landscape of the song
Building a song demo or creating lead sheets, that could be shared and used as a tool to get your song performed
Co-writing & developing other peoples ideas to encourage you to be less precious about your own ideas by working on someone else’s :)
Building your songbook - establishing a writing a habit that allows you to build a body of material you can revisit, rather than starting cold each time. Finding a routine is an essential step to finding the songs you want to write & start writing them
Each week we will have an online workshop (7:30-9pm) where we will focus on a particular songwriting topic, together. There will be live exercises to complete in the session as well as homework*, and there will be space each week to get feedback from Fini as well as feedback from peers (if you consent!). Alongside the live session (and access to replay), you will have access to a private shared space online (Skool / Discord) where you can upload homework exercises, and anything else you would like to share for feedback.
*Homework will be designed to support your learning throughout the 10 weeks but there is no pressure to complete this to a deadline, or share your work with the group- you can take your time and set the pace you need.
Your input
After running the songwriting pathway at the Guildhall since 2017, and working with 100’s of songwriters in groups & individually, it may not surprise you to know that I already have a core curriculum in mind for the ten weeks! However, I want to hear if there is anything specific you would like me to cover, too; As the first cohort, you will get more say in shaping this than anyone who comes after- so if there's something specific you want to dive into together, let me know and it goes in!
Investment
The investment for the 10 Week Course is £1200, with a maximum of 8 places available.
Payment plans are available on request.
FAQs
-
Absolutely not. This 10 week course is for anyone who is developing their songwriting practice; whether you've recently changed direction and you find yourself here, or you're a more practiced writer looking to level up your skills.
-
If you've ever felt strongly about something; a news story, a conversation, an experience or a moment, you have something to say. That feeling is unique to your own lived experience and no one else can tell it in your voice. One of the things we will explore together is that there is so much more to write about than the obvious subjects. Your life is the material :)

This 10 Week Course will offer you a deep insight into your creative practice; building on what you already understand about songwriting, identifying what tools you have at your disposal, as well as learning new ways in. That alone will level up your writing, because awareness of what you're capable of can change everything. I think the main reason we write bad songs is that we're not writing enough, and on top of that we're also probably not connecting to what it is that we actually want to say. This course will help you to reintroduce (or explore for the first time) what a regular, reliable practice looks like, for you.
-
Yes absolutely! Community is such an integral part of the life of the musician & songwriter. On signing up to the course you will be invited to join a private Skool group (& Discord group) where you are encouraged to connect with your peers, share your music (&bits of homework!).
-
Some basic understanding of music theory would be helpful but this is not absolutely a requirement to participate. If you think your knowledge or limited understanding of various aspects of music making might hold you back drop me a message and we can discuss if this would be a right fit for you.
-
You don't need to share your songs. There will be opportunities to reflect on and share any homework tasks and to get a little feedback if you'd like, but this is always and entirely your choice. Sharing what you've been working on is never a requirement, only an option.
-
The sessions will be recorded and they will be available for participants to watch back for 6 months. 10 weeks is a long time to keep a specific time in your diary free, so having access to the session replay is a great way of keeping up to date whilst keeping to your own schedule!
